Starting over after a long career is not a reset. You begin again with two decades of pattern recognition and a sharper sense of what to leave out, which is why I went from running an agency back to building a product with my own hands.

For about a decade I ran a design agency. Then I stopped. Not because it failed. It did the opposite. I stopped because I wanted to be close to the work again, and the role I had built kept moving me further from it. So I closed one chapter on purpose and opened a blank one: first as a consultant, then as the co-founder of a product I now help build every day.

People treat starting over as a reset, like you wipe the disk and boot from zero. I think that is exactly the wrong picture. You do not begin again with nothing. You begin again with twenty years of pattern recognition and a much clearer sense of what to leave out.

Beginning again is not erasing the past. It is spending it.

Experience is leverage, not luggage

The fear that keeps experienced people stuck is that the new thing makes the old thing worthless. It is the reverse. Every brand I built, every team I scaled, every client relationship I kept alive for years: none of that is history I left behind. It is the compounding interest I get to spend now. I move faster because I have already made most of the expensive mistakes once.

What changes is the shape of the bet. An agency spreads you across many clients and many problems at once. A product narrows you down to one problem you commit to for a long time. After years of breadth, that focus felt less like a constraint and more like a relief.

From managing to making

For years my leverage came from people: the team did the work, and my job was to create the conditions for their best output. That is real, and I am proud of it. But there is another kind of leverage I had stopped using: a product that keeps working while you sleep. Code does not need a standup. A good system serves the thousandth user as well as the first.

Going back to making was not a step down from managing. It was a different instrument. I missed the feeling of shaping something with my own hands and watching real people use it the next morning. So I went and got it back.

The thing I carry from the agency years is that craft and commerce are not enemies. The best work I ever shipped was both beautiful and good for the business. Starting over as a product co-founder is just that belief taken to its logical end: I am responsible for the kerning and the revenue, the interaction and the unit economics.
