Taste is not innate. It is a trained skill built from exposure, reps, and honest feedback. That is good news, because when AI makes output free, taste, the judgment about what is worth making, becomes the most valuable thing a person can develop.
People call taste a gift, usually as a way to excuse not building it. If it is something you either have or you do not, then there is nothing to do but envy the people who got it. I have spent twenty years watching taste get made, in other people and in myself, and the gift story does not survive contact with the evidence.
Mine did not arrive. It accumulated. Years of looking at far more work than I made, making far more than anyone saw, and being corrected by people whose eye was ahead of mine. What looks like instinct now is just a very long history of feedback I stopped having to think about.
Taste is just feedback that has hardened into instinct.
How you actually train it
- Look at enormous amounts of work, good and bad, until the difference stops being vague and starts being specific.
- Make a lot, and ship it. Taste you never test against reality is just preference.
- Get feedback that names things. "I do not like it" teaches nothing. "The spacing is fighting the type" teaches forever.
- Study why the good is good, not just that it is. The reason is the part you can reuse.
This matters more now, not less. When anyone can generate a thousand competent options in a minute, the scarce skill is no longer making them. It is knowing which one is right and why. That is taste, and the comforting part, the part the gift story hides, is that it is learnable. You are not waiting to be chosen. You are choosing to put in the reps.
