For an MVP or launch, a freelancer or a senior design partner usually beats an agency on cost and speed. A design subscription works for small, repeat tasks, not complex product UX. An agency makes sense when you need many disciplines at once and someone else to manage them. The right answer depends on scope, how much direction you can give, and how long the work lasts.
The decision table
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | A clear, contained scope and a founder who can direct the work | One person’s availability; you manage it |
| Design subscription | Small, repeatable tasks: ads, decks, landing page tweaks | Request queues rarely handle complex product UX |
| Agency | Large scopes across many disciplines at once | Layers between you and the people doing the work; cost |
| Design partner | Senior judgment across product, brand and website, without a full-time hire | Usually one focus at a time; not a big production team |
| In-house hire | Constant, long-term design work | Cost and hiring risk before you have enough work |
If the real question is whether to build a team, hire an agency or lean on AI tools, we cover that in In-house, agency, or AI. It’s the same idea from a different angle: decide by where design judgment has to live, not by price alone.
If a design subscription is on your list, read when “unlimited requests” is the wrong fit before you sign up.
Product, brand and website: one vendor or three?
Many startups hire a branding studio, a web agency and a product freelancer separately. It works, but someone has to keep the three consistent, and that’s usually the founder. A partner who does all three keeps the site, the brand and the app looking like the same company.
Questions that decide it
- Is the scope clear, or will it change every week?
- Can you direct a designer, or do you need someone to push back?
- Is this a one-off launch or ongoing work?
- Do you need product, brand and website, or just one of them?
Where FormForm fits
We’re a design partner: one senior person across product, brand and website. Launch (from US$12k) for a fixed sprint, Partner (from US$6k/mo) for ongoing work. If a freelancer or a subscription fits you better, we’ll say so.
If a senior partner across product, brand and website sounds like the right fit, send your brief.
Asked & Answered
Often, yes. MVPs need fast senior decisions more than a big team.
A freelancer usually executes what you ask. A partner also challenges the scope and owns the system.
For small UI tasks, yes. For flows, states and a design system, it’s usually the wrong fit.
