What is a design partner?
A design partner is a senior designer or small studio working with a company over time on product, brand and website. Not a design partner program.

A design partner is a senior designer or small studio that works with a company over time, shaping product, brand and website decisions rather than just delivering files. It’s different from a “design partner program”, where early customers help a startup shape its product.
Search for “design partner” and you get two different things mixed together. One is a kind of outside designer. The other is a kind of early customer. Founders hear both, often in the same week, so here is the short version of each, and what we mean when we use the term.
What are the two meanings of “design partner”?
- The studio kind: an outside senior designer who works like part of your team.
- The customer kind: early customers who test a product before launch and give feedback, often in exchange for early access or pricing.
The second meaning is common in startup and venture writing, for example in a16z’s framework for finding a design partner, where the partner is a company that uses an early product and helps shape it. Both meanings are about shaping a product together. They just sit on opposite sides of the table.
This page is about the first.
Design partner vs agency vs freelancer: what’s the difference?
- An agency delivers a project with a team and layers: an account lead, a creative lead, the designers doing the work.
- A freelancer usually executes a defined task: a set of screens, a landing page, an illustration style.
- A design partner owns decisions and the system over time, and pushes back on the brief.
None of these is better in general. The difference is where the judgment sits. With a freelancer, you decide what to make and they make it. With an agency, the judgment is spread across a team you mostly don’t talk to. With a design partner, the person deciding is the person designing, and they stay long enough to live with their decisions.
A design partner is hired for judgment over time, not for a batch of files.
When does a design partner make sense?
When you need senior design across launches, redesigns and systems, but don’t have enough work for a full-time senior hire. In practice that tends to look like this:
- You’re about to launch, and positioning, brand and product are all still moving.
- You shipped fast, and the product and site no longer feel like one brand.
- Your team builds with AI tools and needs a design system those tools can follow.
- You have designers, but nobody senior setting direction.
If you’re weighing the options, In-house, agency, or AI covers where design judgment should live, and Choosing a design partner when AI can make anything lists the questions to ask before you hire one.
How does FormForm work as a design partner?
One senior designer, end to end, across product, brand and website. There are three ways to work together:
- Launch, from US$12k: a fixed sprint of about 4 weeks, from idea to a product and brand you can launch.
- Partner, from US$6k/mo: ongoing design for teams that already shipped, one focus at a time, month to month.
- Director, from US$18k/mo: a fractional design lead running several tracks at once, plus direction for your designers.
Details and what each one includes are on /partner. Why we set it up for the long run is in One-time clients, long-term partners.
If you’re looking for one, send your brief.
